New Roof for Visitor Centre - June 2013

18-06-2013

Rum’s Visitor Centre received some much needed TLC this month thanks to the sterling efforts of our volunteers Gav, Dave and Claire.  The rusted, holey tin roof has been Shiny new roof (c) Ali Morrisreplaced and the whole building looks much smarter as a result!

Visitor Centre make-over (c) Vikki TrelferThe Visitor Centre is housed in what was a boatshed in the time of the Bulloughs’ ownership of the island and it still has the original oak panelling inside.  After the island was sold to the Nature Conservancy in 1957 the building was used as a petrol store for a number of years, receiving a new lease of life as a Visitor Centre in 2009 when it was taken over by the community on Rum.

The information and displays inside are maintained by our Ranger, Mike Werndly, who is only too happy to answer your questions on the island’s flora and fauna.  Mike has an exciting programme of events running over the summer, alongside his regular weekly talks on a Tuesday and Thursday evening, the “Discover Rum” guided walk on a Wednesday, and “Where Eagles Dare” guided walk on a Friday.  Golden eagles and sea eagles are regularly spotted over the village, and the walks are on good paths at a leisurely pace.

Upcoming Ranger events this summer include:

Kid’s Biodiversity Afternoons: Friday 12th July & Monday 26th August – Energetic exploration and games with environmental education thrown in. *Kids go Free!*

Damsels & Dragons: 2nd July – delve into the unseen lives of Rum’s dragonflies and damselflies.  2hr guided walk & pond dipping fun! Suitable for all ages.

Evening Storm Petrel Excursion – 15th July – Join Ranger Mike for an evening monitoring excursion, catching and ringing these enigmatic little birds.  Booking essential.

Meet the Rum Ponies: 27th August – Join Reserve Officer Lesley Watt for an up close and personal encounter with the island’s favourite four-legged friend!  Suitable for all ages.  *Free Event!*
